AI‑Enabled Geoscience Research

The world needs more critical minerals and that creates challenges and opportunities. At the MinXAI lab, we combine geoscience research with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle these challenges head-on. MinXAI students get hands-on experience using powerful tools like deep learning and large language models to unlock new value from legacy data, predict mineral potential, and help industry and government make informed decisions that balance conservation with economic development opportunities. We’re building the talent and technology needed to power a more secure and sustainable future. Examples of research themes that are suitable for MSc and PhD graduate research projects and available on the Student Opportunities page include:

  • Applying the latest large language models to automate geological mapping and predict mineral potential. We run these models locally to keep data private and secure;
  • Method development activities related to remote sensing and ground-based sensors (LIBS and pXRF) for rapid geochemical analysis and material characterization from space and in the field. These applied research projects are critical for reducing mineral exploration timelines and costs;
  • Field-based studies combining structural geology, geochemistry, and geochronology to advance mineral systems models. These conceptual models are critical for resource and reserve calculations and create new search spaces for mineral exploration.
